If you’re relatively new to the everyone belongs™ blog, you might be wondering just what the Inclusion Awards are. Since 1996, the DDRC has been recognising individuals for the work they have done to make Calgary an inclusive city. The awards are presented at a gala event in September, where the contributions of these outstanding Calgarians are celebrated.

So, what sort of contributions would qualify?

  • A local employer prioritising diverse hiring practices at their business.
  • A teacher working for inclusive education in their classroom.
  • A community member who volunteers to help out at events that promote inclusion.

This is only a small sample of the type of people we want to recognize. Chances are good that someone in your life would be a perfect candidate for nomination!

There are 14 awards available in three different categories:

Community

  • Inclusive Education Award
  • Inclusive Employer Award
  • Inclusive Community Award
  • Corporate Spirit Award
  • Volunteer Spirit Award
  • Good Neighbour Award
  • Special Achievement Award

People with Developmental Disabilities

  • Award of Excellence in Career and Community
  • Outstanding Self-Advocate Award

Additional information on each award can be found on the nomination forms. Nomination forms are available here. Nominees are not eligible to win if they have received an Inclusion Award in the past two years. To view a list of all previous winners, click here.

The Writer’s Corner: Kaleigh & Julie

We’ve always known it’s true, but we are excited to be able to share it: the DDRC’s got talent! This month, we were approached by two separate individuals, each with a passion for writing and a story to share. So without further ado, we introduce to you: The Writer’s Corner.

Readers might remember PACE client Kaleigh Mirosch from the last time she was featured in our enewsletter, or from the cover of the Spring 2013 issue of Connection magazine. The food connoisseur shared her latest review with us: Starbucks in Britannia.

JulieP
Central Team CRW Julie Picoc

Julie Picoc joined the DDRC’s Comprehensive Care team in 2013, and became a Community Resource Worker with the Central Team in September of 2014. Before coming to the DDRC, she worked as a teacher and a nanny in both the Philippines and Hong Kong.

She has been in Calgary for seven years, and insists that she even likes our Alberta winters! The hardest thing for Julie is being away from her family, but she is motivated to stay by a desire to provide for her children.

Julie has been writing poetry since high school, but has had a hard time dedicating time to her art while working full-time. She is making it a priority to spend more time writing again. She says that her work is inspired by everyday life, sharing that “since I am away from my family, I love to write about life.”

What then could be a more appropriate title for the poem that she has chosen to share with us? Click here to read Julie’s poem, “Life.”

Growing a Community

Ah, spring. The time of year when our city gets a little warmer, the days get a little longer, and the air is filled with the fresh scents of all things green.

This year, we are welcoming spring in our community in the brand new Rutland Park community garden!

One of the newest community gardens in Calgary, the Rutland Park garden was built in the fall of 2014, and is open for planting for the first time ever. We worked closely with the garden committee during the planning and building stages of the garden, as having an inclusive space was a high priority for all those involved. A variety of bed heights and large walkways make this site accessible to individuals with wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices.

The DDRC’s Creative Coordinator, Crysta Trask, has organized a garden club for clients and Community Resource Workers who are interested in learning about planting in a hands-on way. Here’s to a marvellous growing season!
