Free Movie in the Park!

For the second year in a row, we are pleased to present the free everyone belongs™ Movie in the Park series! Our first night this year was hosted outside of the Rutland Park Community Centre, and was a huge success with nearly 80 people coming out to enjoy “Up” by the moonlight.

Our second night will be hosted at the Bowness Community Centre at 7904 43 Ave NW, starting at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow! We’ll begin the evening with a short film from Picture This… Film Festival called “One Question,” and will then play our full-length feature – “Toy Story.” Bring your friends and family, some lawn chairs, and some snacks to enjoy (we’re fans of M&Ms…), and don’t forget to dress for the weather!

The DDRC’s social brand everyone belongs was launched in 2003, and has since become our agency’s vision. This is the belief that our communities are more vibrant, healthy, safe, strong, and satisfying when all people, regardless of ethno-cultural background, disability, age, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class are included and welcome. Come help us celebrate!

New Look, Same Vision

Eleven years ago, DDRC clients and employees took to the streets in bright yellow t-shirts to spread the important message that everyone belongs. Since then, that message has become the agency’s vision, and the belief that guides all of our programs and services.

After celebrating the brand’s 10 year anniversary in 2013, we wanted to find a new way to continue to share this important message. There was no doubt that everyone belongs™ was here to stay — but how could we get our communities excited about it all over again? That’s when we decided to give our logo a makeover.

After nine months of planning and preparation, we are excited to unveil the new everyone belongs™ logo:

We hope that you like our new look as much as we do, and look forward to sharing it with our great city!

December 3: Giving Tuesday & International Day of Persons with Disabilities

In 1992, the UN declared December 3 to be the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the aim of promoting an understanding of, increasing awareness for, and building support for issues surrounding persons with disabilities.

December 3, 2013 is also the first time that Giving Tuesday is coming to Canada! Giving Tuesday is a movement created in the United States to build community and support charities during the busy holiday season. Giving Tuesday follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday; and what better way to follow two days that benefit the economy than a day to benefit the community?

Not only is this a great way to kick-off the giving season, it is also an opportunity for all of us to redirect our focus during the busy month of December. This Tuesday, we encourage you to make a difference to an organization that is important to you, whether that be through a donation of time, money, or goods.

As previously mentioned, this Tuesday will also be the 21st annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year, the DDRC is raising funds to help launch the Saturday Children’s Learning Program: a program to offer assistance, resources, and natural supports to children with developmental disabilities, as well as a time of respite for their families. The program will aim to improve co-operation skills, gross and fine motor skills, and the comfort of being in a group setting. These skills are essential to a child’s development and ability to participate in his or her home, school, and community. At the DDRC, we believe that people with developmental disabilities who receive this support in childhood will be more involved in their communities as adults.

For the past ten years, the DDRC has operated under the vision that everyone belongs™. Help us make Calgary a city where everyone’s abilities are nurtured and potential is developed, so that together we will make our communities more vibrant, healthy, safe, and strong. Please consider supporting a child with a developmental disability for Giving Tuesday and get the 2013 holiday season started on the right foot!

Movies by Moonlight

In 2003, the DDRC’s social brand everyone belongs was launched. Ten years later this brand, which has since become the agency’s vision, is as relevant as ever: the belief that our communities are more vibrant, healthy, safe, strong, and satisfying when all people, regardless of ethno-cultural background, disability, age, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class are welcome and to fully participate. What better way to recognize this milestone than to celebrate with our communities?

As summer is coming to an end, we are inviting you (and everyone you know!) to a free everyone belongs outdoor movie event! The evening will kick off with a short film from Picture This … on the Road (part of the Picture This Film Festival), followed by a full-length animated feature. So grab a blanket, some snacks, your kids, siblings, friends, grandparents, or neighbours, and join us for a night of fun under the stars!
