3 Ways to Get Involved This Winter

The Inclusion Awards may be over for another year, but things are far from quiet at the DDRC! Here are 3 great ways to get involved in the coming months:

1. Come to our Christmas Craft Sale

Date: Saturday, November 8
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Volunteer With Us

We are looking for Volunteers!

A lot of work has gone in to the redesign of our volunteer program, and we are happy to share these exciting new opportunities for community members! Our newest program allows volunteers to work with Community Resource Workers to support DDRC clients. We are currently accepting applications from anyone interested in this Volunteer Resource Worker Program, and are searching specifically for people enrolled in a disabilities studies program or with comparable experience and interests.

If you are looking to support our agency in other ways, why not join our events volunteer team? We host a variety of fundraisers and community events that rely on volunteers for success. Administrative positions are also available; we need volunteers to support agency employees to provide our clients with the best service possible. These administrative positions are always changing as we identify new areas where volunteers can help support our mission.

To find a volunteer position that’s right for you, to learn more about our programs, and to get involved, contact Austin Clem by phone at 403-240-7314, by e-mail at [email protected], or by visiting www.ddrc.ca.

Meet Our Team Leaders: Tobi Lynne Fowler

You may remember the interviews we conducted with Northeast Team Leader Cassandra Therens, Central Team Leader Selma Gearhart, or Northwest Team Leader Rochelle Hughes. Now it’s time to head south and get to know our South Team Leader, Tobi Lynne Fowler.

South Team Leader Tobi Lynne Fowler

How long have you been with the DDRC?
A little over two years. I started as a CRW for the PACE team, and became the South Team leader just over a year ago.

What made you want to work here?
I’ve been in the industry for about 20 years. Before coming to the DDRC, I was providing in-home support. And after a couple of years I decided it was time to get back into the industry outside of my home because I wanted to make sure that my skills were kept up, and all of my training was up to date. I just didn’t get the same kind of opportunities when I was only working out of my own home.

I had always heard wonderful things about the DDRC. I applied to several agencies, and the DDRC was of the ones that returned my call, and here I am!

What’s the best part about being a Team Leader?
Getting to know all of the staff and clients, and just the contact that you have with everybody within the agency.

Can you share a recent client success story from the South Team?
We have many people that have started new volunteer and employment positions. We’re also seeing a lot more clients advocating for themselves.

What is your favourite thing about fall?
The weather. It’s not too hot, and it’s not too cold. You can still do a lot of things outside, and you can barbeque without having to wear a winter coat!

Free Movie in the Park!

For the second year in a row, we are pleased to present the free everyone belongs™ Movie in the Park series! Our first night this year was hosted outside of the Rutland Park Community Centre, and was a huge success with nearly 80 people coming out to enjoy “Up” by the moonlight.

Our second night will be hosted at the Bowness Community Centre at 7904 43 Ave NW, starting at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow! We’ll begin the evening with a short film from Picture This… Film Festival called “One Question,” and will then play our full-length feature – “Toy Story.” Bring your friends and family, some lawn chairs, and some snacks to enjoy (we’re fans of M&Ms…), and don’t forget to dress for the weather!

The DDRC’s social brand everyone belongs was launched in 2003, and has since become our agency’s vision. This is the belief that our communities are more vibrant, healthy, safe, strong, and satisfying when all people, regardless of ethno-cultural background, disability, age, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class are included and welcome. Come help us celebrate!
